Pastor/Director of Family Spiritual Formation - Position Description

About College Park & Ministry Vision

College Park is affiliated with the United Brethren in Christ (UB.org), located in Huntington, Indiana (pop. 19K city, 37K county), next to Huntington University.  Attendance averages 250 adults in worship, and is currently among the largest churches in Huntington. The mission/purpose of College Park Church is:

College Park Church exists to develop thriving followers of Jesus

In an effort to bring this mission to life in this season of ministry, our current vision is:

To reach, teach, and equip families to passionately follow Jesus

This vision statement is crucial for understanding the current state of ministry, direction, and development at College Park.  Our “all in focus” right now is ministry and relationships relevant to families with children living at home. So we are unapologetically directing much of our attention, energy, and resources to our children, students, and family ministries.

The Ideal Candidate

We are seeking a true visionary and self-directing, innovating, leader to help lead our church family upward and forward into fruitful relationships, ministry structures, and the reach of our ministry into the community. The ultimate title for this position (Pastor or Director) will be determined by the individual’s “testimony of calling”, but the ideal candidate is:

  • A man or woman with a pastoral calling and/or a deep passion for ministry to children & families.  While there are specific programs to be coordinated and led with excellence, this is a highly relational position - one that requires a high degree of emotional intelligence, interpersonal and relational skill, a desire to teach the Word of God, lead from the starting point of prayer, shepherd the Church, and advance people in their developing discipleship.
  • A team player. We seek to foster a true “team ministry” approach with each member, while responsible for distinct areas of ministry, contributing to the overall leadership, direction, and discernment of the life and ministry of the church. Like all College Park Pastors and Directors, the man or woman in this position will be expected to invest in the shepherding, discipling, and care-giving aspects of ministry.

General Qualifications

  • A healthy and growing, personal, abiding relationship with Jesus Christ
  • A commitment to a life of fervent and regular prayer
  • 5+ years of pastoral/director ministry experience is preferred
  • A team-focused commitment to ministry.
  • Commitment to personal/professional development through books, seminars, and conferences.
  • Experience with developing, organizing, and effectively managing teams and programs.
  • Ability to relate effectively with children and families in large and small groups.
  • Experience and training related to:
    • Organizing volunteer efforts
    • Public relations leadership skills
    • Exercising discretion with confidential information
    • Program/meeting planning
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience reading, interpreting, editing, and/or extracting information from various sources, including policies and procedures, program guidelines, manuals, reports, contracts, invoices, and correspondence.

Specific Role Responsibilities:

At this stage of growth and ministry at College Park Church, the Pastor/Director of Family Spiritual Formation is primarily responsible for the oversight of the Children’s and Family ministries.  After a period of acclimation (“Season 1”) in these areas, it is anticipated the Pastor/Director of Family Spiritual Formation will take on other leadership responsibilities commensurate with his/her gifting, capacity, and passions (“Season 2”).  The ideal candidate will be open to taking on responsibilities in the adult discipleship ministry dynamics found below, but other options are certainly possible.

Primary “Season 1” Focus: Children’s (birth - 5th grade) & Family Ministries

This position is responsible for the following aspects of the ministry initiatives:

  • Recruit, equip, train, and develop children’s ministry leaders and teams
  • Administration and execution of a curriculum for all aspects of Children’s ministry (e.g. Gospel Project, WonderInk, etc.), including dissemination of teaching materials, resource allocation, and space set up.
  • Implement and follow College Park's safety and security policies and procedures.
  • Communication of ministry plans with families (emails, newsletters, social media, etc.)
  • Pastoral care for families
  • Creating and leading opportunities for outreach to unchurched children’s families
  • Perform other ministry tasks as assigned by the Lead Pastor & Elders

  • Sunday Morning
    • Occurring most Sundays, year-round, during both worship times (currently 9:00am & 10:30am):
      • Nursery (birth-3yrs)
      • Wee Worship (preschool & kindergarten)
      • Kids’ Worship (1st-3rd grade)
      • Club 456 (4th-6th grade) (in cooperation with Student Ministry Pastor)
    • Further age-specific class divisions are anticipated with growing numbers
  • Sunday Evening

      • Sprouts (birth-preschool)
      • DIG (K-3rd)
      • GROW (4th & 5th)
  • Special Events
    • As determined by this position in concert with the College Park Staff & Children’s Ministry Team (comprised of a small group of lay persons), including, but not limited to:
      • Vacation Bible School
      • Parent-Child Dedication Sunday events
      • Baptism classes & annual baptism service(s)
      • Parents’ Nights Out
      • Camp participation & organization
      • Seasonal special events
  • Family Ministry
    • This is an area of ministry attention in recent development at College Park, and the man/woman in this position will have the exciting opportunity to develop and shepherd its continuing formation in partnership with the Student Pastor, Lead Pastor, and a dedicated team of lay-persons.  This facet of ministry may include:
      • Parenting discipleship/learning opportunities
      • Marriage enrichment events/resources
      • Family events/retreats/campouts
      • Fostering marriage mentoring connections
  • Future Family Ministry Development
    • As College Park anticipates growth and increased ministry activity, there exists the possibility of additional ministry initiatives for which with the Pastor/Director of Spiritual Formation will function, not as direct overseer/director, but as staff liaison and advisor.  Such ministry initiatives could include, but are not limited to:
      • College Park Preschool
      • Upward/YMCA Sports
      • After school / remote-learning family support
      • Partnership with local homeschooling co-opt(s)
  1. Possible “Season 2” Additional Focus: Adult Discipleship
  • The ideal candidate for the College Park Pastor/Director of Family Spiritual Formation will be a man or woman who can also give leadership to some of the areas of adult discipleship ministry listed below.  This includes communicating with group leaders/teachers, promotion of opportunities to the congregation, resourcing leaders, and working with staff and elders on matters of scheduling, calendar planning, recruiting new leaders, and training.
    • Sunday morning groups
    • Sunday evening modular groups
    • Adult home-based small groups formation & support
    • Elective opportunities such as Financial Peace, GriefShare, etc.
